Volunteer Board Member

ASCY – Affiliated Services for Children and Youth serving the Hamilton, Niagara, Brant, and Haldimand-Norfolk communities.

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

ASCY provides multiple services including capacity building via professional learning, mentorship and resources to Early Childhood Educators in the city of Hamilton and Haldimand-Norfolk. ASCY is the lead organization for the Preschool Speech and Language Services in Hamilton. ASCY is the lead agency of the Central South Infant Hearing Program and Central South Blind Low Vision Early Intervention Program (serving children and their families in Hamilton, Niagara, Brant and Haldimand -Norfolk).

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The ASCY Board operates under a results-based, policy board model. This model is a collaborative partnership between the Board and the Executive Director, with a focus on vision, strategic planning and agency governance. Board members are not involved in the management of operations. The Board meets monthly on the third Monday of each month (except July and August) at 5:00 -6:30 pm. In addition to the monthly Board meetings, there is the opportunity for making contributions by involvement in task-focused committees. The Annual General Meeting is held in June.

SKILLS AND EXPERTISE:

ASCY is looking for individuals who can contribute their time and talents to our volunteer Board of Directors. Applicants will share our belief in:

  • quality care and education as an important early investment that leads to later outcomes of success for all children
  • the vision that all children belong and have equal opportunities to thrive
  • capacity building and mentorship of educators that work with young children
  • early identification, prevention, intervention, and capacity building to support children to achieve their developmental milestones
  • collaboration with families, children, professionals, and communities to share knowledge, build capacity and create equitable opportunities for all.

Currently the ASCY Board of Directors consists of members with a variety of lenses, including Human Resources, Health, Legal, Education and Children and Social Services. We are committed to cultivating an inclusive Board culture, rich in knowledge and experience, and seek to create a Board that reflects the diversity of the families and communities we serve.

Umbrella Family operates full-day early learning and childcare centres for infant, toddler and preschool children, as well as extended childcare programs before and after school for kindergarten and school age children in the Greater Hamilton Area.

We are currently recruiting for a Program Manager to join our team. As a member of the Management Team, this position provides strategic direction and leadership to the service delivery of the organization. The Program Manger provides tactical leadership on the day-to-day operations and issues regarding the services provided by Umbrella Family. This position manages program development with a strong focus on “How Does Learning Happen?” and employee management that align with the Umbrella Family’s mission, vision and values.

Years of Experience: more than 10 years

Qualifications:

  • Degree: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Early Childhood Education or a related field is required
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators, Ontario
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s pedagogy, “How Does Learning Happen?” and the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA)
  • Supervisory Experience

You have outstanding communication and problem-solving skills in a multi-disciplinary team environment. You are non-judgmental, caring and empathetic with a respect for diversity in the workplace. You have current Standard First Aid and CPR certification and are able to successfully complete a police clearance with a Vulnerable Sector Screen. You are required to obtain a medical clearance with up to date immunizations. CPI training (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) and proficiency in French language are an asset.
